William Bridgman: From Naval Architecture to Defence Innovation

From a passion for marine engineering to working at the forefront of autonomous subsea technology, William has built an impressive career grounded in hands-on learning, technical expertise, and a drive to contribute to national defence.

William completed a Foundation Degree in Naval Architecture between 2021 and 2024, building on his earlier Marine Engineering HNC achieved during his Advanced Engineering Management Apprenticeship with the MOD in Devonport.

His studies covered a wide range of topics essential to the marine sector, including engineering science, advanced CAD (Computer-aided Design), and vessel design and manufacture – the latter being his favourite module.

Reflecting on his time at the College, William highlights the exceptional learning environment at the College’s Centre of Higher Technical Innovation & Maritime Skills. The industry-leading facilities provided the perfect setting to develop practical, hands-on skills, while knowledgeable lecturers brought real-world expertise into the classroom.

William believes that the capabilities he honed during his Foundation Degree played a vital role in helping him develop his subsequent career. Experience in Design for Manufacture (DFM) – gained through the vessel design module – has proven especially valuable, alongside a strong foundation in material science. Beyond acquiring technical knowledge, William also made the most of every opportunity to network and build connections during his studies, which he considers invaluable to his professional success.

Helsing, Europe’s largest defence technology company, opened a brand new factory in Plymouth in 2025 focusing on maritime capabilities and building the company’s SG-1 Fathom – an autonomous underwater glider designed and manufactured in Britain to strengthen European and allied defence. The skills William had developed during his Foundation Degree made him a natural fit for the organisation.

Currently employed as a Lead Mechanical Hardware Engineer in Research and Development at Helsing, William focuses on the design, testing, and manufacture of autonomous subsea systems. His role places him at the cutting-edge of innovation and sea defence.

For him, Plymouth is the ideal place to build a career, combining a rich naval history with exciting advancements in marine autonomy. He believes the city plays a crucial role in national defence due to its strategic location and ongoing investment in the sector.

For those looking to follow a similar path, William offers simple but powerful advice: “To somebody looking to follow in my footsteps, I would say get involved in any opportunity presented to you. Speak to people and network. And most importantly, don’t ever stop learning.”
