Jack

Jack had always dreamed of having a meaningful job, but for a long time, the right opportunity seemed out of reach. He had faced challenges in finding employment, but when he joined Project SEARCH, he saw it as a chance to change his future. Project SEARCH is a programme that partners with employers to provide real-world work experience and essential skills development for young adults with learning disabilities or autism, and Jack was ready to make the most of it.

Jack’s Supported Internship, with University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, was based within the hospital’s Logistics Team. Jack knew this would be his chance to develop skills that could set him on a path to independence. He started with a bit of nervousness, but the supportive environment and mentorship at Project SEARCH helped him settle in.

Jack, a passionate Plymouth Argyle supporter, quickly found a common interest within the Logistics team, which helped him settle in more easily. His first few weeks were focused on learning the basics. Jack quickly demonstrated a strong attention to detail and an eagerness to help wherever he was needed. He took on each new responsibility with enthusiasm and a clear focus on learning more.

During his time as an intern, Jack grew in confidence. With each task he completed, he was praised by his mentors and the hospital team for his reliability, work ethic, and willingness to learn. Jack received some very good appraisals and was able to focus on areas to improve, based on the feedback. Jack has developed in his communication skills for the workplace, his self-confidence has grown, and he now knows much of the layout of the hospital.

The Logistics Team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust saw Jack’s potential early on. As he became more skilled, his tasks grew more complex. His supervisors took note of his dedication and began involving him in larger tasks. They were impressed by his problem-solving ability and his positive attitude, both of which were crucial in the fast-paced hospital environment.

By the end of his internship, Jack had proven himself to be an invaluable part of the team. His consistent performance and the relationships he had built with his colleagues led to an exciting opportunity. After being invited to interview after submitting a successful application, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust offered him a paid, full-time position within the Logistics Team. Jack was overjoyed, but also incredibly proud of how far he had come. His hard work and determination had paid off, and he was now in a role that allowed him to contribute to the hospital’s operations in a meaningful way.

As Jack settled into his new role, he continued to receive support from the Project SEARCH team. They celebrated his success and continued to help him navigate his career path. Jack’s story has not only changed his life but also inspired others in the Project SEARCH programme. He became a role model for interns, showing them that with determination, the right support, and an openness to learning, employment opportunities could be within reach.

Jack’s story is one of resilience, growth, and the ability to thrive when given the right opportunities. He continues to learn and grow in his role, always eager to contribute and make a difference, and his success has made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
