Liam

Before joining City College Plymouth, Liam spent most of his education at Brook Green Centre for Learning, a specialist school where he built strong foundations in maths, English and independent living skills. Liam’s interests are in football and darts, and he is a dedicated Manchester United and Plymouth Argyle Football Club fan, attending almost every away game.

When it was time to take his next step, Liam wanted to push himself further and gain new experiences. He enrolled on a Skills Development course at the College, where he continued his English and maths studies, while developing essential life skills and independent living skills such as cooking sessions. Some days, he worked in the College’s onsite restaurant, PL1 Restaurant, preparing food orders and baking cake.

Despite being excited about this new opportunity, Liam initially found the size of the College overwhelming. He said, “It felt massive at first, but by the end of my first year, I knew where everything was. If my mum came in and asked where something was, I’d know. I feel really comfortable here and the staff have been really supportive.”

As Liam’s confidence grew, he was offered the chance to take part in a Supported Internship with the Students’ Union. This opportunity allowed him to gain valuable workplace experience, preparing him for future employment. After a conversation with his tutor, Liam knew it was the right next step for him.

Liam said, “The Programme Manager for Supported Internships called my mum after my interview and said I was brilliant. He asked if I wanted to do the Supported Internship and I said yes, because I wanted to focus on getting the skills I need for employment.”

During his time studying in Skills Development, Liam developed skills in both cooking and IT. He particularly enjoyed food preparation, finding a strength in chopping and kitchen organisation. His IT skills have improved, and he’s become confident in using Google Docs and Slides. Now, he feels more comfortable supporting others who need help with digital tasks.

Liam said, “My computing skills are pretty good now. I know how to use a computer, use Google Docs and Slides, and if anyone needs help, I can show them how to use it too. I’m passing on my skills.”

Liam has always been a friendly and confident person, but his experience at the College has helped him become even more independent. Looking forward, Liam’s main goal is to get a job in retail, as he enjoys helping customers. He already has some experience behind a till, which has given him the confidence in handling transactions and customer service.

Liam said, “I did work experience in a local shop a couple of years ago. I worked behind the till, scanning things and giving the right change. I was able to add up and take away and I was happy doing that. It made me want to work in retail in the future.”

Liam’s journey at the College highlights how a Supported Internship can build confidence, develop real-world skills and help students take the next step in their employment journey.
