Martin’s path to the healthcare sector started with his engagement with the Skills Builder project, introduced to him by the JobCentre. While he had held various odd jobs in the past, his long-term goal was always to enter the healthcare sector – he just wasn’t sure how to get there. After a period of unemployment, Martin found that his confidence and skills needed development to successfully re-enter the workforce.
So, he enrolled in Plymouth Argyle Community Trust’s Career Works course, where he focused on essential job-searching skills such as interview techniques, CV writing, and employment skills. By the end of the six-week programme, Martin earned a Level 1 Award in Behaviours, Attitudes & Attributes Required for Employment – building a solid foundation for his future career.
Following on from this activity, Martin continued to engage with the Skills Builder project and completed a Working in Health taster session at the College – an experience that gave him valuable insights and practical skills for the healthcare industry, preparing him for a future role in the sector. Martin also began working with Livewell Southwest as part of the project, where he received further career advice and guidance. This support has helped him secure a week of work experience, providing a real-world opportunity to apply his newly learned skills. As part of his confidence-building efforts, Martin also signed up to get fit with Plymouth Active Leisure – ensuring he was tending to his personal growth as well as professional. Martin’s experience highlights the effectiveness of the Skills Builder project in equipping individuals with the tools they need to succeed, especially those who face challenges like long-term unemployment and economic inactivity. He now feels more confident about his future in the healthcare sector and is actively pursuing opportunities to advance his career.
