Michael has spent many years as a full-time carer for his partner, which meant stepping away from formal employment for an extended period. However, with a passion for personal and professional development, Michael decided it was time to focus on his own growth in 2024. Having previously worked in the healthcare sector, he wanted to explore ways to reconnect with that field.
Michael began his journey by enrolling in the Career Works course through the Skills Builder project. The course helped him refresh his job-seeking abilities, including CV writing, interview skills, and general employment strategies. After gaining confidence from this initial step, he took part in a Working in Health taster session at City College Plymouth. These sessions helped him better understand the role of a health professional, focusing on key topics such as developing a person-centred approach, effective communication, safeguarding adults and children, and mental health awareness. The experience reignited his passion for the healthcare sector and motivated him to take his development even further.
Now, Michael is completing his Maths and English qualifications at City College Plymouth, with a clear goal of re-entering the workforce. He feels more equipped and ready to apply his skills in the healthcare sector once again.
Michael’s story demonstrates how, even after a long break from employment, engaging with programmes like the Skills Builder project can rekindle motivation and provide a pathway to new opportunities. With renewed confidence and qualifications underway, Michael is excited to resume his career in the healthcare sector.
