Peter

Peter*, a full-time parent of three children, is striving to improve his maths skills and achieve a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification. Living locally in Efford, Peter attends City College Plymouth’s Multiply sessions held at the ELM Community Centre in Estover. These sessions, designed for adults looking to boost their numeracy skills, provide an inclusive and supportive environment tailored to learners’ needs.

Peter’s motivation is rooted in his desire to overcome the challenges he has faced with maths in the past. The programme’s one-to-one support sessions have been a game-changer for him, allowing him to express himself freely and ask questions without hesitation. “Having someone to guide me step by step makes all the difference,” Peter shared. The flexible format of the sessions fits perfectly into his schedule—he attends the lessons every Thursday morning after dropping his children off at school.

Multiply, the government-funded initiative delivering these sessions, focuses on helping adults develop essential numeracy skills. By offering free courses in accessible locations like the ELM Community Centre, the programme ensures that learners from all backgrounds, including full-time parents like Peter, can work towards their goals in a supportive setting.

Peter’s determination and commitment to learning are evident in his consistent attendance and active participation. Achieving a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification will open doors for Peter, improving his prospects for employment and giving him greater confidence in managing daily tasks.

Peter’s story showcases the importance of accessible, community-based education. Multiply’s tailored approach ensures that individuals like Peter, who may have struggled with maths in the past, are equipped with the tools and support they need to succeed. By empowering learners to achieve their goals, the programme is making a lasting impact on their lives and their families’ futures.
