Our £13m Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) opened in autumn 2017 and combines cutting-edge equipment, high-tech teaching facilities, and plenty of comfortable and contemporary areas for students to relax and socialise.
Our aim is to be the learning destination of choice, and the Regional Centre of Excellence has been a starting point as the College strives to be a major contributor in the citywide efforts to make Plymouth a powerhouse for growth and investment.
STEM is a huge area of growth within the South West, but a shortage of the right skills could hold the region back from achieving its potential and creating new well-paid employment opportunities that will retain and attract the best and brightest.
From creating innovative new cooking methods and engineering the perfect stage set-up to improving athletic performance and developing new beauty treatments, STEM subjects influence almost every job you can think of.
The Centre was developed with the input of over 200 employers and will give City College students the opportunity to work together across traditional subject boundaries, getting you the transferable skills which will give you the edge in a competitive job market.
Known on campus as the STEM Centre, the Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM features fully furnished science laboratories, as well as multiple computer workshops where students will learn the intricacies of hardware and software programming. The technical side of media can be explored in the digital TV studio – complete with infinity curve wall – four editing suites, an animation studio and a live recording studio.
There are also analytical laboratories and dedicated spaces for electronics testing, and the sports science laboratory enables our expert lecturing team to train future sporting heroes using the latest equipment for sport performance enhancement and analysis.
The centre also comprises the Maths Centre for Excellence – a superb facility that is leading the way in post-16 maths education. The Maths Centre for Excellence is part of our new, highly innovative Digital Learning Quarter.
