What to expect before you start

Your application is in, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Keep an eye on your emails for:

  • your interview or course discussion (if required)
  • updates about your place
  • information about enrolment and start dates
  • any specific kit or uniform you might need.

Getting Ready for College Life

Your first week is all about settling in, getting to know people and feeling confident. You’ll take part in a full induction where you will:

  • meet your lecturers and classmates
  • learn your timetable and where your lessons take place
  • explore the College facilities and student support services
  • join team-building activities
  • get your student ID and log into College systems.

We know starting somewhere new can feel daunting, but we’re here to make it as easy and welcoming as possible.

You’ll be contacted about your next steps. This might include an interview, a course discussion or an invitation to enrol. We’ll keep in touch with you by email so make sure we have your correct contact information!

Most students attend up to five days a week, depending on the course. Timetables reflect real-world working patterns and may include work placements.

There’s no standard uniform at City College Plymouth. You’re welcome to dress in a way that reflects who you are, as long as it’s appropriate for a learning environment.

Some courses (such as catering, construction, hair and beauty or engineering) require specific clothing or personal protective equipment (PPE) for safety. We’ll let you know exactly what’s needed before you start.

You’ll be assessed in a way that suits your course and learning style. This could include:

  • practical projects
  • coursework and reports
  • presentations
  • and exams (where required).

One-to-one academic support and additional learning help are available, especially for students with SEND or learning differences.

Absolutely. College life goes beyond the classroom. You’ll have the chance to take part in:

  • sports and wellbeing sessions
  • clubs and societies
  • volunteering and student ambassador programmes
  • guest speaker events and trips.

Information for Parents & Carers

Yes. We have a dedicated safeguarding team, clear procedures and a student-first approach to wellbeing and safety.

Our Learning Support Team offers tailored help, including in-class support, equipment and personalised learning plans. We encourage early conversations so we can put support in place before term begins.

We offer:

  • academic mentoring
  • counselling and wellbeing services
  • referrals to external support if needed.

We provide:

  • progress updates via email
  • parents’ evenings
  • contact regarding attendance, behaviour or wellbeing (as appropriate and GDPR-compliant)

Yes. Support may be available for travel, meals, equipment and more through our Student Funding Team.

We offer clear progression into university, Apprenticeships or work, plus we support with CVs, interviews and UCAS.

If you’re not sure whether university is for you, don’t worry. We offer plenty of options that help you build experience and qualifications, including T Levels, vocational courses and Access to HE diplomas.
