SKILLS BOOTCAMPS
Part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee to help everyone gain skills for life. Our Skills Bootcamps are shaped with employers to respond to their skills shortages and are aimed at those aged 19+ who are:
- unemployed
- self-employed
- returning to work or
- independent learners looking to advance their skills into higher-paid employment in sectors and jobs that are more resilient to changing economic conditions.
Welding Bootcamps

We are running an Introduction to Welding Skills Bootcamp and an Advanced Welding Skills Bootcamp.
The following topics will be covered:
- health and safety in an engineering environment
- correct use of MMA/MIG welding via an augmented reality welder
- Correct use of MMA/MIG welding equipment
- intro to TIG welding
- using welding equipment to carry out different types of welded joints
- employability suite of online learning.
On successful completion of the Bootcamp, you will have an interview with a local engineering/manufacturing company.
Green Skills and Retrofit Bootcamp
This Skills Bootcamp is focused on developing greater knowledge of the retrofit agenda. Upon successful completion, you will gain a Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit.
This is a 60 hour course delivered over six weeks via blended learning, which includes a mix of in-person sessions at the College’s state-of-the-art green skills construction facility and online learning.

The course will include training on:
- understanding and use of thermography equipment to survey and understand building construction
- external wall insulation
- loft insulation
- heat pumps
- assessing for retrofit
- surveying and building pathology in retrofit
- upskilling on low-carbon technologies
- PVs, solar hot water heating, battery storage
- experience drone surveying and thermal imaging, and if successful, gain a CAA drone flyers ID.
Students will have access to a suite of online learning modules which can be selected from, according to an individual’s needs, to work through at a pace that suits outside of classroom hours.
At the end of the course, all students will complete an assessment and be awarded a NOCN Certificate from the Retrofit Academy.

Babcock Marine Submarinisation Bootcamp
This Skills Bootcamp, developed in collaboration with Babcock International, aims to enhance the skill set of Devonport dockyard personnel, specifically for those working afloat in submarines.
The programme spans 10 weeks and is hosted at the College’s Kings Road campus. It encompasses an array of subjects, including the interpretation of engineering drawings, conducting pressure tests, and the processes of removal and installation.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be well-versed in a broad range of essential skills required for submarine maintenance and operations.
Please note that this course is only open to Babcock employees.
Mechanical
The course will include training on:
- fasteners and fixings
- reading engineering drawings
- pressure testing
- removal and installation
- shock mounts and noise regulations
- alignment principles on a submarine
- surveying and dimensional inspection
- cartridge valves.
Electrical
The course will include training on:
- fasteners and fixings
- reading engineering drawings
- plugs and connectors=
- fiber optics
- shock mounts and noise regulations
- survey material state
- removal and installation.
Interview with a local employer
Upon successful completion of the course we will arrange for you to attend a job interview with a local employer. This will give you the opportunity to showcase a portfolio which will be created as part of your course and with your new skills, you will be able to stand out against other candidates being interviewed for the live vacancy.

If you are interested in using Skills Bootcamps to upskill current employees, you will be expected to contribute to the cost of training. Large employers will contribute 30% of the cost, and small or medium employers (SMEs – fewer than 250 staff) will contribute 10%.
