Higher Education

At City College Plymouth you can unleash your potential by studying HNCs, foundation and honours degrees plus other higher-level qualifications across a variety of subjects. And all built around you, with many flexible part-time options.

Wrapped in a personalised experience, taught by industry experts, and in cutting-edge facilities to get you 100% work ready. Here’s why you should consider City College Plymouth for your university-level qualification …

Small campus

Some aspiring students crave that big university environment, but for others – particularly those who might have taken a break from education – this can be daunting. We limit the number of students on our courses so you receive a more intimate higher education experience.

Small groups = more contact time

Smaller groups mean our lecturers can offer more contact time. At City College, you won’t just be a name on a register, you will be part of a community where everyone knows your name and your preferred learning style.

Industry-experienced lecturers

Nearly all of our lecturers come from industry. This allows them to bring vital industry knowledge to their courses, ensuring our students receive a rich combination of academic knowledge and workplace skills that employers look for.

Work around your degree

At other universities, you might have lectures every day of the week making it harder to arrange your work (or family commitments) around your course. At City College, we want to make this as easy as possible by only timetabling your lectures for one or two days a week.

Enjoy the best of both worlds

Your qualification will be awarded by the University of Plymouth or Plymouth Marjon University and, as a result of this, you are considered a student at your awarding university, giving you access to many of the facilities on their respective campuses, from the libraries to the Student Unions.

Save money

Our students save around £3,000 on fees compared to bigger universities. But just because our fees are lower, it doesn’t mean the quality is lower. You will still receive an exceptional level of education. In fact, our higher education students are the most satisfied in Plymouth according to the 2021 National Student Survey.

Higher Technical Qualifications and Higher Apprenticeships

We know there are other routes and qualifications that can lead to successful careers. Not only do we offer a wide range of degree-level Apprenticeships, we are the city’s first provider of Higher Technical Qualifications. HTQ status is only granted to courses that are providing the skills employers have said they need. From September 2022 our foundation degree in software development will be an official HTQ, and from September 2023, we’re delighted to announce that our foundation degrees in strength and conditioning and construction will gain HTQ status.
