Level 1 Construction and the Built Environment – Hard Hat Ready
Nineteen year old Alfie has begun his career in construction, supported by a prestigious employer.
Having previously studied bricklaying at South Devon College and achieving his NVQ Level 1, Alfie set his sights on furthering his career. And, he turned to City College Plymouth to do just that.
Alfie spent his first first few days learning the ropes of his Level 1 Construction course with Kier, a tier one contractor, and was looking forward to the unique benefits that the course offers – including interacting with professionals currently working in the industry.
“I was really surprised at the range of facilities here, I haven’t seen that at any other college. It means that the work that we do is unique and there’s so much more to learn.”
From carpentry and joinery to painting and decorating, the five-week course gives students the opportunity to dive into a range of sectors in the construction industry, giving them a taste of everything the field has to offer.
“I’m really enjoying bricklaying. We’ve done a lot on blockwork and learning how to make mixes, as well as learning the basics of using hand tools and a saw. We’re building our knowledge from the ground up. The course has given me loads of new skills already and I know it’s going to help me long-term, too.”
Following his course, Alfie’s set on securing an Apprenticeship on a building site to apply the skills and knowledge he’s gained with the College and further his experience.
