What's it all about?

This course has been designed and delivered in partnership with Kier Construction, one of the UK’s leading construction and infrastructures providers. 

It is the ideal introduction to the construction industry and covers essential skills in the following construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling, and plumbing.

Throughout the course you will be given opportunities to interact with professionals currently working in industry. Guest speakers will provide weekly talks covering the following subjects: 

• the environment 

• sustainability 

• modern methods of construction (MMC) 

• employability and pathways to upskilling, including Apprenticeships 

• health and wellbeing.  


You will also be given the opportunity to enhance your numeracy skills in a real life context. 

The onsite training and learning centre will give you the opportunity to train to gain your CSCS labourer card and practical skills on and off-site. 

Course information

The course covers the following:

  • introduction to health and safety in construction 

  • CSCS test

  • constructing halving joints

  • painting techniques

  • constructing half brick walling

  • preparing background surfaces and applying render coats

  • fixing architraves and skirtings

  • constructing block walling

  • constructing half brick return corners

  • preparing background surfaces and applying finishing coats

  • installing rainwater goods.

This course is suitable for those aged 19+ who would like an introduction to a variety of construction trades, and to gain skills in those areas and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in. No previous knowledge or experience is required.

You’ll learn in the classroom and in the workshop, using suitable tools and materials.

Each unit is assessed via practical assignments and there is an optional e-assessment available.

Upon successful completion you may progress onto the following:

  • Level 1 Diploma in Brick, Plastering, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating, Plumbing

  • Level 2 Diploma in Brick, Plastering, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating, Plumbing (dependant on meeting the entry criteria for these courses)

  • Apprenticeship in Brick, Plastering, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating, Plumbing

  • employment opportunities.
