Education doesn’t always follow a straight path.
For Stephan, a former engineering student who once viewed the classroom with apprehension, success came through a blend of supportive teaching, practical learning, and real-world application.
Stephan began his educational journey at City College Plymouth in 1998, studying BTECs in IT, engineering fundamentals and computer-aided drafting, and found the environment a far cry from earlier school experiences.
“The College had a really supportive and friendly environment, it was the perfect place to nurture my academic skills but also gave me a lot of confidence in not only my studies, but myself.”
It was this knowledge that paved the way for Stephan to explore various roles in engineering across the region, eventually leading him to take over his father’s business, Oatway Design, in 2014. Under Stephan’s leadership, the company has flourished, expanding its reach and impact within the engineering construction sector. Reflecting on his educational journey, Stephan credits City College Plymouth for providing him with the skills and confidence needed to navigate the challenges of the business world.
