What's it all about?

Do you want a job as a nail technician, providing acrylic nail, gel nail and fibreglass nail treatments? If so, this VTCT qualification in Nail Technology at City College Plymouth will get you qualified! In order to practice and perform nail treatments you will need to purchase a uniform and kit and when you finish the course you will be fully equipped to either start your own nail business or start work in a local beauty salon or nail bar.

 

Course information

On this course, you will cover the following:

  • infection control
  • health and safety – this unit is to increase your understanding of health and safety and its importance
  • nail enhancements – maintaining and removing nail enhancements, using either UV gel, liquid and powder, or wrap nail systems
  • manicure treatments – you will learn about consulting with the client, recognising any contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a treatment plan, in addition to filing and buffing the nails, using skin and cuticle treatments, massaging the hand and lower arm and using a suitable nail finish
  • client care and communication.

You will also develop your understanding and skills by undertaking an optional specialist unit, which includes pedicure treatments. This qualification structure will provide you with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required depending upon your designated career pathway as a junior nail technician.

A recognised level 1 qualification in manicure and pedicure or up-to-date industry experience is desirable, but not essential, in order to begin this course.

Continual theoretical and practical assessments will take place with final practical assessments for each system. Examinations will be online or by written assignment.

Career opportunities exist in a variety of contexts as a junior nail technician, including:
– commercial nail salon
– retail concession ‘nail bar’
– independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.

Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a junior nail technician, you may choose to develop your skills further by undertaking technical level qualifications at level 3 or you could progress to an Apprenticeship.
