What's it all about?

This course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to develop competence as a healthcare support worker across a range of healthcare settings.

You’ll study core competencies alongside a choice of specialist areas, allowing you to tailor your learning to your career goals and interests. The course also provides the evidence required to enter the sector, demonstrating your attainment against occupational standard knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs).

  • handling information in healthcare
  • personal development in healthcare settings
  • implementing person-centered approaches in healthcare settings
  • equality and inclusion in healthcare setting
  • health, safety and wellbeing in healthcare settings
  • the responsibilities of a healthcare support worker
  • duty of care
  • safeguarding and protection in healthcare settings
  • the principles of infection prevention and control
  • cleaning, decontamination and waste management
  • understanding mental health conditions
  • undertake physiological measurements
  • principles of professional practise
  • working as part of a professional team
  • preparing for employment in a healthcare setting
  • understanding mental health
  • support person centered thinking, planning and reviewing
  • support activities for individuals and groups that promote wellbeing. 

In order to succeed on this course, you must have achieved five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and maths.

You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including coursework and a work placement.
