As a Nuclear Health Physics Monitor apprentice, you’ll be at the forefront of radiation protection, ensuring that nuclear facilities operate safely and within regulatory limits. You’ll gain hands-on experience with advanced radiation detection equipment, develop critical analytical skills, and learn to work independently and as part of a team. This Apprenticeship offers a comprehensive pathway to mastering radiological protection, from monitoring and controlling radiation levels to implementing safety protocols, all while contributing to the safe and efficient operation of nuclear facilities.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including:

  • monitoring radiation levels in the workplace and surrounding environment
  • implementing safety protocols to minimise radiation exposure
  • conducting radiological surveys and assessments
  • using specialised instruments to detect and measure radiation
  • analysing and interpreting radiological data to ensure compliance with safety standards

At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within a nuclear health physics environment, applying your learning in real-world scenarios.

For the best chance of success, learners are required to have a minimum of grade 4 (C) in English and maths.

The end point assessment will consist of a knowledge test, a practical assessment and an interview.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include roles such as a health physics monitor, a health physics surveyor, etc.
