Give your business the SMART Skills treatment

Future proof your business with fully funded SMART Skills training.

SMART Skills is funded by the European Social Fund that aims to help Devon-based, small to medium-sized businesses identify skills gaps in their existing workforce and provide fully funded skills training that will help these businesses become more resilient.

The SMART Skills partners include the CSW Group, City College Plymouth, South Devon College, Petroc, Focus Training, University of Exeter and Learn Devon.  Collectively, these partners cover a broad range of skills including (but not limited to) advanced manufacturing and engineering, digital technologies, marine, composite, environmental futures, clean growth and renewables, construction and hospitality, and STEM industries.  City College Plymouth will be focusing on digital technologies.

The programme began in October 2020  and will run for three years. The overall project hopes to support 2,980 businesses and individuals in Devon, Plymouth and Torbay. The Smart Skills Hub plays a significant role in the programme, providing employers and other stakeholders with a centralised point of contact to obtain up-to-date information on training provision, with more information available here – https://cswgroup.co.uk/home/employers-and-adults/smart-skills-hub/.

City College Plymouth has a dedicated Digital Innovation Coach who will be able to deliver anything from one-day masterclasses through to ten-week flexible programmes, which can be taught face-to-face, online or via a blended delivery to meet employer and individual needs. Training provided by the College will focus on areas such as digital marketing, Google applications, project management and other skills and topics related to digital skills.

Digital Masterclasses

SMART Skills officially launched at City College in April, with the first set of digital masterclasses delivered in May: they were a big hit!

The fully funded one-day masterclasses were attended by individuals in industry, self-employed individuals and those in the process of launching a new business. The masterclasses covered marketing-related skills such as design, film and sound, and incorporated the perfect blend of theory and practical skills.

One of the attendees, Roshani, shared her experience of the masterclasses.

Roshani said: “I attended all three masterclasses and collectively they provided the perfect balance to enable me to catalyse my business.

“Even if I decide to outsource any work, it’s still essential to have an understanding of design, film and sound. I completed the classes with far more knowledge than I had anticipated on developing in such a short timeframe, but I also now have far greater levels of confidence and self-belief.

“The masterclasses have not only saved me money but have saved me a significant amount of time. Up until now I’ve been mostly self-taught, but there is only so much you can learn from YouTube tutorials. The masterclasses provided just the right balance between theory and practical experience at a great pace.”
