Ian Poyser

Ian was working in the waste and resource management industry but when the pandemic prompted a change in career path, he joined City College and took advantage of the Taking Teaching Further programme to support his transition from industry to education.

Ian was able to work as a lecturer and maintain his industry links whilst studying the course over two years, as he was able to fit his study around other commitments. There were contact hours one evening per week, with aspects of distance learning which provided flexibility and allowed Ian to balance his work and personal life.

Ian said: “My tutor, Chris, provided a fantastic level of support and he is a credit to the College. I was also grateful for the support of my teaching colleagues as well as my teacher training peers.

“I now have a greater understanding of student needs and inclusive teaching styles which is a huge benefit to my practice. I am now aware of the fundamentals of education and the compliance that goes with this.

“Anyone considering the switch from industry to teaching, as well as current teachers who are wanting to upskill would definitely benefit from this course.

“In the future I would like to undertake additional training in special educational needs to further support students and develop my new career in teaching.”

The City & Guilds Diploma in Education and Training at City College Plymouth is an in-service route to a qualified teacher or assessor role in further education colleges, work-based learning, or community, public sector and private training.
