What's it all about?

Take the next step towards a career in engineering with this practical and technical level 3 programme. You’ll develop a broad range of engineering knowledge and skills through a combination of classroom learning, computer-aided design (CAD) and practical workshop activities.

The course follows the EAL Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering Technologies, with a Maintenance Engineering Technology pathway. You’ll study key areas including: engineering mathematics, CAD, maintenance engineering, engineering communications, and health, safety and environmental principles.

This course is ideal if you’re looking to progress to an engineering Apprenticeship, employment or further study, and want to develop the technical knowledge and practical understanding valued across the engineering sector.

Course information

This course provides a broad introduction to level 3 engineering, combining technical knowledge with practical, industry-relevant skills. You’ll study five units covering key areas of modern engineering:

  • Engineering and Environmental Health and Safety – develop an understanding of health and safety responsibilities, safe working practices and environmental management in engineering
  • Engineering Mathematics – apply algebra, trigonometry, areas and volumes, basic calculus and statistics to engineering problems 
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) Techniques – develop skills in producing 2D engineering drawings and 3D models using industry-standard CAD software 
  • Maintenance Engineering Principles – explore the materials, tools, equipment, technical information and methods used within maintenance engineering 
  • Engineering Communications – develop the written, verbal, graphical and digital communication skills used within professional engineering environments.

Learning takes place through a combination of classroom-based technical study, CAD and practical workshop activities. The course is designed to build a strong foundation in engineering and prepare you for progression to an Apprenticeship, employment or further engineering study.

In order to be successful on this course you will need to have GCSE English and maths, with at least a grade 4 in one subject and a grade 3 in the other.

If you have a grade 3 in either English or maths, you will be supported to continue working towards improving your grade alongside your engineering programme. You will be expected to pass the relevant GCSE while studying at the College.

Applications will also be considered based on your previous qualifications, engineering experience and individual circumstances.

Assessment takes place throughout the course using a combination of controlled knowledge assessments, examinations, practical assessments and portfolio evidence.

Depending on the unit, you may complete a range of assessments, including: written or online knowledge assessments, engineering calculations, CAD tasks, practical activities, technical drawings, reports, presentations and other evidence that demonstrates your engineering skills and knowledge.

Units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Upon successful completion, you may progress onto:

  • Engineering Apprenticeships in areas such as maintenance, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, fitting, mechatronics, technical support and engineering design 
  • higher-level engineering study, including the HNC in Mechanical Engineering 
  • employment within the engineering sector.

The skills and knowledge developed throughout the course will also provide a strong foundation for further progression to higher education and professional engineering careers.
