What's it all about?

Prepare for a future in software development and engineering with this intensive one-year programme. Designed for adult students and career changers, the course develops the key technical, analytical and problem-solving skills needed for success at university and in the digital workplace.

You’ll explore core areas of computing, including programming, web development, databases and computational logic, building both practical coding experience and a strong understanding of the theory behind modern software systems. Alongside your technical studies, you’ll also develop transferable skills in project planning, testing and critical thinking – highly valued by employers and universities alike.

Whether your goal is to progress to a computer science or software engineering degree, or to begin your career in the tech industry, this course provides a solid foundation and the confidence to take your next step.

Course information

If you’re aiming for a university degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or IT Systems, this course is the ideal starting point. Designed for adult students without traditional level 3 qualifications, this course provides a strong foundation in both the mathematical and technical skills needed for success in higher education and beyond.

You’ll develop your problem-solving and analytical skills through subjects such as algebra, calculus and statistics, alongside key computing disciplines including programming, web technologies, databases, systems analysis and cyber security. You’ll gain hands-on experience designing and testing software, building websites, and working with programming languages such as C#.

Alongside the technical content, our academic study skills modules will help you build confidence in research, presentation and digital communication – preparing you for the demands of university-level study.

By the end of the course, you’ll have developed the practical, mathematical and critical thinking skills valued by both employers and universities.

To succeed on this course, you need to be committed to your study and focused on your career choice. This route is designed for adult students (19+). Funding is not available for those aged 18 and under, and we would recommend that alternative vocational qualifications and A Levels are considered, which support progression onto further or higher education and employment.
This Access to Higher Education course requires a level 2 achievement in English and maths. This may be a grade 4 (C) or above in GCSE English and maths, a level 2 qualification, or equivalent. It will not be possible for you to be offered a place on an Access course without meeting our entry requirements.

If you do not currently hold a level 2 qualification in English and maths, then you are invited to undertake a skills test as part of our interview process. Achieving on our skills test is sufficient to meet our entry requirements for Access to Higher Education, however, you are strongly advised to seek further advice from your chosen university regarding completing GCSEs as part of your application.

Your offer for entry onto our Access course may be conditional to a number of factors which may include achievement of level 2 in English and maths, satisfactory performance at interview, evidence of recent study, evidence of relevant work experience, and specific criteria for international students (please see below).

Applicants who would like to apply but find that their qualifications don’t meet the entry criteria are encouraged to contact us on 01752 305300 to discuss a suitable alternative course.

Please check with your chosen higher education institution if GCSE English/maths is required for your progression route. For care/NHS related courses, evidence of experience in health/social care professions is recommended.

For distance learning:

To study this Access course via distance learning, you must have already gained GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4/C or above.

Entry requirements for international students:

City College Plymouth welcomes applications from international students; however, you are strongly recommended to clarify with your chosen university your responsibilities as an international student. You may be required to complete an IELTS or CEFR recognised equivalent test score exam prior to an interview or record IELTS 5.5 on your application. There may also be funding implications relating to your international student status. Please ensure that you are clear on university entry requirements for international students.

The Access to HE Diploma is only available to students who are resident in the UK (including BFPO), Channel Islands or Isle of Man. It is not available to international students studying overseas.

You will be assessed through a mixture of written assignments, practical projects, presentations, and exams.

On successful completion, you could progress to a wide range of university degrees and career pathways. Many students move on to higher education in computer science, software engineering, cyber security, data science, games development or IT systems.

The skills gained on this course also prepare you for entry-level roles in the digital and technology sectors, giving you a strong foundation for a rewarding career in one of the fastest-growing industries.

Please note fees are quoted for one year only.
