What's it all about?

This qualification will give you breadth of knowledge and understanding across a broad range of issues relevant to the finance sector, but also equips you with the necessary occupational and core skills and behaviours to succeed in the industry.

You will learn the fundamental principles of financial accounting in order to understand financial principles, concepts and practices, and how they link to relevant accounting, bookkeeping and business mathematics requirements.

T Levels are a new qualification designed to give you a head start towards the future you want. They follow GCSEs and are equivalent to three A Levels.

This two-year T Level qualification brings classroom and work placement together on a course designed with employers and businesses.

You’ll spend 80% of your time between the workshop and the classroom and 20% on a 45-day placement to give you the skills and knowledge employers are looking for.

The course offers a variety of progression routes; employment in accounting to finance or continuing on an academic journey through to a higher level apprenticeships or onto university. The T Level will allow you to gain valuable work experience that employers want as well as not closing the door for further study such as university or higher-level Apprenticeships.

Course information

The T Level is split into two parts – the core component which provides the underpinning knowledge and skills to gain understanding of the industry, followed by a specialism.

Year 1: core component

  • Professionalism and ethics/equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Security and risk
  • Professional services
  • Fundamentals of law
  • Fundamentals of financial accounting
  • Technology
  • Data driven innovation/analytics and design thinking

  • Project/change management and administration
  • Fundamentals of financial accounting (accounting pathway content).

Year 2: specialims

  • Accounts assistant

To be successful on this level of programme you will need an appropriate level of understanding in English and maths to be able to fulfil the coursework requirements.

We welcome applications from those who have one or more of the following:

  • six GCSEs at grades 9-4; you must have gained a grade 4 in English and a grade 4 in maths
  • successful completion of the level 2 T-Prep Foundation Programme with a recommendation from your personal tutor
  • a level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma or equivalent, graded merit or above
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship programme.

This course is currently only for 16 to 18-year-olds.

Core component

Your core subject knowledge will be assessed through externally set examinations.

There are two exams with a duration of two and a half hours that will make up 60% of your overall grade.

There will be a practical employer set project that will put your core skills into practice making up the remaining 40% of your overall grade.

The core component is graded A*-E.

Occupational specialism

Externally set assignment which has a 100% weighting for this component. The assignment will be graded pass, merit, distinction.

Work placements

You will attend a minimum of 314 work placement hours of the period of two years. You will be expected to source a placement yourself however, there is a work placement team at the College to support you throughout.

On successful completion of the course, you can progress directly into work in the management and administration sector or develop skills further by progressing on to:

  • university-level study in a related subject at institutions throughout the UK
  • a higher level Apprenticeship
  • employment in a variety of jobs, for example: payroll administrator, assistant accountant, trainee accounting assistant, account clerk, cashier, finance assistant, purchase ledger clerk.
