This top-up course is relevant to anyone interested in a career as a manager or leader within the public or community professions. It emphasises the importance of theory in practice and is, therefore, designed and delivered by community and public service experienced academics with excellent sector links. This ensures that graduates fully understand the complexity of delivering services in the helping professions and have developed the appropriate skills and knowledge for a successful career across the public, commercial, voluntary, and charitable sectors or one of the multi-agency bodies associated with them.

Course information

The course covers the following subjects:

  • ethical decision making
  • understanding addiction and compulsive behaviour
  • management and leadership for change in the community and public service
  • community and public service delivery and evaluation
  • community and public sector research project
  • understanding mental health and mental illness
  • cohesion and conflict.

We welcome applications from those who have a level 5 qualification in a relevant subject. Should entry requirements not be met then individual cases will be considered.

Assessment is 100% coursework which will include: essays, reports, web pages, information booklets, presentations, discussion and briefings. 

There are no exams on this course.

Upon successful completion, you may progress to level 7 study such as a Master’s Degree, or a range of public and community sector Graduate Training Schemes. The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in a wide range of public, community, voluntary and charitable organisations such as:

  • community healthcare
  • social work
  • probation
  • victim support
  • youth work
  • local government
  • emergency and armed services.
