As a Composites Technician, you will become an integral member of a skilled team, responsible for manufacturing and assembling complex composite parts and structures. Composite components are used in the aerospace, automotive, construction, furniture, marine, medical, motorsport, oil and gas, rail, and renewables industries and many more. Your role will involve working with advanced materials like carbon fibre, glass-reinforced plastics, and other composite substances to create lightweight and durable components that meet precise engineering specifications. You’ll be at the forefront of innovation, contributing to the development and production of cutting-edge products that drive industry advancements.

This Apprenticeship is designed to equip you with comprehensive hands-on experience and specialised training in composite manufacturing techniques. You’ll learn essential skills such as preparing and processing composite materials, operating state-of-the-art machinery, and conducting quality checks to ensure that all components meet rigorous industry standards. Additionally, you will be trained in health and safety practices specific to working with composite materials, ensuring that you can perform your tasks safely and efficiently.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including the following:

  • preparing and using composite materials and equipment
  • manufacturing and assembly operations
  • maintaining and improving composite production equipment
  • applying health and safety procedure
  • interpreting technical data and documentation
  • working within a team.
This Apprenticeship spans 36 months, providing apprentices with hands-on experience and technical knowledge in various aspects of composite manufacturing, such as material handling, assembly techniques, equipment maintenance, and safety procedures in an engineering environment.

The entry requirements for this Apprenticeship will be decided by the employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above.

The end point assessment will consist of an observation with questions, an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence and a multiple-choice test.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include roles such as a composites materials technician, a composites designer, etc.
