Course information

This course provides a strong foundation, equipping you with valuable transferable skills that are highly sought after by employers and higher education institutions alike.

Enterprise and Entrepreneurs

This unit introduces you to the fundamental concepts of enterprise and entrepreneurship. It explores the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, the various types of enterprises (eg, sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, social enterprises), and the external factors that influence business operations. You will develop an understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset, including creativity, innovation, and risk-taking, and how these contribute to business success.

Developing a Marketing Campaign

This unit focuses on the principles and practicalities of creating effective marketing campaigns. You will explore market research techniques to understand customer needs and market trends and will learn about the marketing mix (Product, Price, Place, Promotion) and how to apply it to different business contexts. The unit typically covers the planning, development, and evaluation of a marketing campaign, including aspects like target audience identification, promotional strategies, branding, and budgeting.

Personal and Business Finance

This unit provides an introduction to managing personal and business finances. For personal finance, it often covers topics such as budgeting, saving, borrowing, and understanding common financial products. For business finance, you will explore different sources of finance, financial statements (like profit and loss accounts and balance sheets), cash flow forecasting, and the importance of financial planning for business sustainability and growth. The unit aims to equip you with the knowledge to make informed financial decisions both personally and within a business context.

Launch and Run an Enterprise

This practical unit challenges you to apply your entrepreneurial skills by planning, launching, and managing your own small-scale enterprise or a simulated business venture. It covers the various stages of setting up a business, including developing a business idea, conducting feasibility studies, creating a business plan, understanding legal and ethical considerations, and operational aspects. You will gain hands-on experience in bringing a business concept to life, managing resources, and addressing challenges that arise during the operational phase.

In order to succeed on this course, you must have achieved a minimum of grade 4 in either GCSE Maths or GCSE English.

If you have a grade 4 or higher in one of these subjects but not the other, you will be required to work towards achieving a grade 4 in the outstanding subject alongside your business course.

In addition to this you must have one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades 9-4
  • successful completion of the Level 2 T-Prep Transition Programme with a recommendation from your personal tutor
  • a level 2 technical diploma, graded pass or above.

Coursework consists of reports and presentations, and there will be externally assessed exams.

Assessment for these units will be varied and designed to reflect real-world business scenarios, incorporating both practical application and theoretical understanding.

You will be assessed through a combination of internal and external assessments. Internal assessments are typically coursework-based and may include tasks such as producing business plans, marketing communications, financial forecasts, reports, presentations, and engaging in simulated enterprise activities or role-plays.

External assessments could involve examinations or controlled assessments that test theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply concepts to given situations. The overall aim is to evaluate your ability to research, plan, develop, and critically evaluate enterprise and entrepreneurship concepts and activities.

Upon successful completion there is an option to “top-up” your qualification to the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship.

Alternatively, after completing the Foundation Diploma, you could progress to one of the following pathways:

  • an Apprenticeship in business, management, marketing, or finance, where you can continue to gain qualifications while earning and gaining real-world experience.
  • a junior role within a business, particularly within small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), where an entrepreneurial mindset and a broad understanding of business are highly valued. Potential roles include marketing assistant, business development support, or administrative positions with opportunities for progression.
  • launching your own enterprise, applying the knowledge, skills, and confidence gained during the course to bring your business ideas to life.

Please note fees are quoted for one year only.
