What's it all about?

The level 4 units lay the foundations of learning by providing a broad introduction to protective services. This develops and strengthens core skills while preparing students for specialist subjects at level 5 or to enter employment with the qualities necessary for job roles that require some personal responsibility. 

You’ll gain a wide range of protective services knowledge linked to practical skills gained through: 

  • research
  • independent study
  • directed study
  • workplace scenarios. 

You will be involved in vocational activities that help you develop vocational behaviours (the attitudes and approaches required for competence) and transferable skills. 

Transferable skills are those such as: 

  • communication
  • team work
  • research and analysis. 

By the end of level 4, you will have knowledge of the basic concepts of protective services. They will be competent in a range of subject-specific skills as well as in general skills and qualities relevant to key areas of protective services.

In order to be successful on this course, you will need: 

  • a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Protective Services
  • GCSE grades at 9 to 4 or A* to C (or equivalent) in subjects including maths and English 
  • other related level 3 qualifications  
  • an Access to Higher Education Diploma 
  • relevant work experience 
  • an international equivalent to the above qualifications. 

This course will be formed of a variety of assessment methods based around preparing you for higher education study. These topics will include:

  • writing essays 
  • lab reports 
  • presenting ideas and skills 
  • leading
    taking part in practical sessions.  

This course provides a solid grounding in protective services, which students can build on if they decide to continue their studies. It will allow you to specialise by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree-level study. Once you have achieved the Level 5 Higher National Diploma, you can develop your career in the business sector by: 

  • entering employment  
  • continuing existing employment  
  • linking with the appropriate professional body  
  • linking with the appropriate vendor accredited certificates (if appropriate) 
  • committing to continuing professional development (CPD) 
  • progressing to university.
