What's it all about?

If you have a learning disability and want to get a job, finding the right path can be a daunting prospect. This vocational employability skills course at City College Plymouth is for you. We will help you to find out your strengths, discover the areas of work that are best suited to you, and help you to gain confidence in all aspects of working life, from application to workplace. We will help you to develop your own personal learning plan to enable you to achieve your personal goals. You will have the opportunity to develop your English and maths skills, work skills through vocational sampling, work placements, independent living skills, self-confidence, and enterprise skills. You will also have the opportunity to take part in a personal development programme (this may include Duke of Edinburgh Award and/or Ten Tors). Having successfully completed this course you can progress to other College courses, take up a training place or find employment.

Course information

The course aims to:

  • develop your skills for work and vocational progression.

The course includes:

  • functional skills
  • vocational options, work skills and work placement
  • personal development and presentation skills
  • vocational certificates eg Certificate in Food Safety
  • the opportunity to follow individual learning interests eg Ten Tors/Duke of Edinburgh Award.

There are no formal entry requirements but desirable skills include:

  • the ability to read and recognise key words, phrases and basic numerical skills
  • the ability to understand and put into action verbal instructions
  • the ability to communicate with others appropriately
  • a desire to improve your work skills
  • a willingness to participate in all parts of the course

You will be required to attend an informal interview.

You will have regular one-to-one tutorials throughout the course, during which your progress will be checked and your individual learning plan reviewed. You will have the opportunity to achieve recognised qualifications through ongoing assessments.

Having successfully completed this course you can progress to other College courses, take up a training place or find employment.
