Thinking about a career as a hairdresser, stylist, colourist, or barber? This course offers a hands-on introduction to the hair industry. You’ll gain essential skills, industry insight, and the confidence to take your next step.

Course Units

  • Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector – Learn how the industry works and explore the different treatments available to clients.
  • Presenting a Professional Image – Develop the skills, behaviours, and values needed to present yourself professionally in the industry.
  • Shampooing and Conditioning – Learn basic techniques for shampooing and conditioning hair.
  • Styling Hair – Explore the products and techniques used to style both women’s and men’s hair.
  • Salon Reception Duties – Understand the role of a salon receptionist, including taking messages, preparing drinks, answering queries, and booking basic appointments.
  • Health and Safety – Learn how to work safely in the salon and carry out basic risk assessments.
  • Plaiting and Twisting – Develop your skills in plaits and twists to create on-trend looks.
  • Themed Face Painting – Learn to apply basic face paint designs.
  • Working with Others to Create a Hair and Beauty Image – Work in teams to create an editorial or competition look based on a set theme, incorporating hair, makeup, nails, and styling.
  • Colouring Hair Using Temporary Colour – Learn how to apply temporary hair colour using modern techniques.

As part of a full-time study programme, you will also study English and maths, alongside a varied tutorial and personal development programme.

There are no entry requirements for this course.

You will build a portfolio of evidence consisting of written assignment work, posters, mood boards, photographs, and practical observations.

On successful completion of this course, you may progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Women’s and Men’s Hairdressing.
