What's it all about?

The short, one week course is suitable for electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since training or who require update training before progressing. It is also suitable for those with some experience of inspection and testing of electrical installations, such as those entering the industry from other engineering sectors or those working in allied trades.

This qualification delivers the specialist knowledge and skills you need, including appropriate legislation, inspection and testing techniques, completing and issuing certificates or reports and understanding of results and measurements.

City College Plymouth will provide all tools and equipment required for your training. We also offer a free breakfast for all of our students and short course delegates will be given a free lunch voucher to use in our Food Court.

Course information

The course covers:

  • fundamentals of initial verification
  • safe working procedures
  • initial inspection
  • test instrument calibration and accuracy
  • test procedures: continuity, insulation, polarity and earth electrode
  • test procedures: earth fault loop impedance, RCD and prospective fault current
  • certification
  • calculations for resistance of copper conductors and temperature correction for earth fault loop impedance values.

This qualification is approved for candidates aged 18 or above.
It would be expected that you will have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade. 

Assessment consists of both practical and theory-based tests.

On successful completion you may wish to progress to another electrical course at the College, such as Photovoltaic Systems or Electric Vehicle Charging.
