What's it all about?

The Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping develops an understanding of the basics of manual bookkeeping. Students completing this qualification may wish to pursue careers in finance or business. This qualification will particularly suit you if you are self-employed or working in small businesses and wish to do your own bookkeeping. It will also develop your skills if you have minimal work experience and require additional support to progress. It may also be of value to you if you are studying other AAT Award qualifications to develop a deeper understanding of the theory behind the practical skills.

Course information

The following units are covered:
  • understanding the role of the bookkeeper
  • understanding financial transactions
  • processing customer and supplier transactions
  • processing receipts and payments
  • understanding the benefits and risks of using accounting software to complete bookkeeping tasks.
You will be introduced to the dual effect of transactions, which is a fundamental underpinning concept for double entry bookkeeping and will support students who go on to study bookkeeping or accounting at foundation level.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however, students should have a good command of English and maths (Functional Skills Level 1), and a desire to develop and enhance business numeracy skills.

This course is assessment based. They are computer based and are set and marked by AAT.

The skills developed by studying this qualification will give students a solid base from which to seek employment, or to progress to the next level of learning. Other AAT short courses may also be relevant such as the AAT Access Award in Business Skills or the AAT Access Award in Accounting Software.
