What's it all about?

Expand your plumbing knowledge and strengthen your professional profile by gaining a nationally recognised plumbing qualification. This City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma is an A Level-equivalent course with a study programme that will equip you with the advanced skills and knowledge to enhance your job opportunities as a plumber or plumbing and heating engineer.

This qualification is for you if you are aged 16 to 18 or 19+, and wishe to work as a plumber in the building services industry. It has been designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provide a platform from which to progress through further learning or into employment.

Course information

This qualification will help you gain an understanding of the skills required within the plumbing sector. You will cover compulsory aspects in the following areas:

  • domestic central heating systems planning and design
  • principles and requirements of environmental technology systems 
  • domestic sanitation system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques 
  • cold water systems planning and design 
  • hot water systems planning and design 
  • building services site procedures and planning.
     

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following three areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills eg preparing you for employment, training or higher education.
     

In order to be successful on this course, you will need four to five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C), including English and maths, and a level 2 diploma.

To gain this qualification, you must successfully achieve the following assessments:

  • one externally set, externally moderated assignment
  • one externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions.
     

This qualification is graded Pass/Merit/Distinction/Distinction*

On successful completion you may go on to complete a higher level course at the College or consider applying for an Apprenticeship in the sector. Completion of this qualification will also enhance your employability within the plumbing industry and help you to gain employment as a plumber or a trainee working on the installation, service and maintenance of complex plumbing and heating systems, including unvented hot water and central heating controls.
