What's it all about?

Do you want to inspire the next generation of skilled workers, innovators, educators and business leaders in the city?

Are you looking for a way to pass on your industry knowledge whilst training for a new career? This course is ideal for anyone wanting to become a lecturer, assessor or work-based trainer at a College or in a company involved in post-16 training or post-compulsory education.

The Award in Education and Training is an evening course studied over a 12-week period. You will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to begin, or re-focus, a career in teaching for the lifelong learning sector or training within industry.

Whilst the course is not a teacher training qualification, it will give you a basic toolkit of teacher training techniques and will encourage you to develop the skills you need to be effective in your new job or current role. If you are already in a teaching role you may wish to consider the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

Course information

The award comprises three units covering the understanding of key aspects of the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education & training, using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training and how to carry out assessment in education and training.

You will attend one session per week over 12 weeks, either face-to-face or online, and be expected to undertake approximately four hours of independent study per week. Tutorial support is available throughout the programme.

You must be 19 years or over and will be expected to attend an interview and

You must also be considering a subject for delivery and be aiming to achieve/or have achieved a qualification and experience for your subject/skill at the appropriate level.

A minimum of Level 1 English and good digital skills are essential in making sure you can complete the necessary assignments.

In addition, the nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that you should have the ability to manage the requirements of the level of the qualification you are taking, read and interpret written tasks, and to write answers in a legible and understandable form.

All assessment tasks must be word-processed and therefore good digital skills are required. You will need to have time available for home study and be able to commit to the full 12-week programme.

Each unit is supported by an assessment workbook and online activities. You are also required to complete a basic lesson plan and deliver an observed session (micro-teach).

The new suite of Education and Training qualifications are stand alone and, whilst we would recommend starting at Level 3 for new teachers, it is now possible to start at level 4 or 5 if you have suitable teaching practice. Upon completion of this Level 3 course, you will be suitably equipped to progress to the Level 4 Certificate or Level 5 Diploma.

Please note; teaching education qualifications have recently been deregulated and as a result are no longer mandatory for teaching posts. However, these qualifications are still relevant and will enhance your CV and may be required by an employer.

Please note fees are quoted for one year only.
