Are you looking for a way to pass on your industry knowledge whilst training for a new career? This course is ideal for anyone wanting to become a lecturer, assessor or work-based trainer at a college or in a company involved in post-16 training or post-compulsory education.

The Award in Education and Training is an evening course studied over 12 weeks. You will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to begin a career in teaching for the lifelong learning sector or training within the industry.

Course information

The award comprises of three units which cover:

  • the understanding of key aspects of the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training
  • how to carry out assessments in education and training.
You will attend one face-to-face session per week over 12 weeks with tutorial support available throughout the programme.

You must be 19 years or older and will need to attend an interview and complete a skills scan before enrolment to determine if you meet the entry requirements.

You should have the ability to manage the requirements of the course due to the demands of the learning and assessment required for the qualification. You will need to read and interpret written tasks, write answers in a clear and legible form and have adequate digital skills.
You will need to have time available to dedicate to home study and be able to commit to the full 12-week programme.

You will be required to complete workbooks, produce a lesson plan and complete an observed micro-teach.

Whilst the course does not give you the qualification to teach, it will give you a basic toolkit of teaching and training techniques and will encourage you to develop the skills you need to be effective in teaching, education and training.

Upon successful completion, depending on your skills, knowledge and experience you may able to progress onto a further qualification of study in education or training such as:
Alternatively, you may wish to study a qualification in assessment or internal quality assurance (IQA).
