What's it all about?

Would you like to train as an assessor, work-based learning assessor or lecturer in post-16 education? Are you looking for a teacher training course that enables you to teach or assess students in post-16 education?

The Certificate in Education and Training (CETT) will provide you with the skills and knowledge to do this . This is a weekly evening course delivered over one full academic year and is ideal for those who do some teaching or training with small groups or individuals, but who do not perform the full teaching role.

Course information

The course runs over nine months following a delivery model which includes attended classes and supported distance learning.

You will gain a fundamental understanding regarding the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to

  • legislation,
  • equality and diversity,
  • inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners.

Be able to:

  • use initial and diagnostic assessments
  • plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning.
  • assess learning
  • use appropriate resources to support effective learning.
  • embed inclusive practice

You will be expected to engage with a range of reading material, carry out research, complete reports , write essays, plan lessons, create resources and be observed teaching or training in your practice context.

You must be at least 19 years old and will be expected to attend an interview.

You must have 30 hours’ teaching or training practice during the course over which you have a degree of control.

You must demonstrate that you are working at Level 2 English and good digital skills are essential in making sure you can complete the necessary assignments.

In addition, the nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that you should have the ability to manage the requirements of the level of the qualification you are taking, read and interpret written tasks, and to write answers in a legible and understandable form. You will need to have time available for home study.

The course is workbook based with a range of formative activities to be completed followed by summative assignments, observations of practice together with the development of a teaching practice portfolio.

Upon successful completion you will be able to progress on to higher level teacher training qualifications, including the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

Please note; teaching education qualifications have recently been deregulated and as a result are no longer mandatory for teaching posts. However, these qualifications are still relevant and will enhance your CV and may be required by employers.
