As a Boatbuilder, you’ll create yachts, workboats, superyachts, and refit and repair existing boats. You will work with diverse materials like composites, metals, and wood, mastering the craft of turning engineering and technical drawings into intricate boat components using various measuring equipment, machines, and hand tools.
In this dynamic role, you’ll be responsible for manufacturing and assembling the structural elements of boats, as well as interior and exterior fit-outs. You’ll work both independently and as part of a team, adhering to organisational and statutory safety, including sustainability requirements, all while maintaining the highest standards of quality and accuracy in your work.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including the following:

  • moving, shaping and manipulating components
  • reviewing and verifying designs and plans
  • boat construction and fit-out
  • repair and maintenance.
This Apprenticeship spans 42 months, combining practical work experience with study. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within an organisation, applying your learning in real-world tasks such as interpreting technical drawings, using tools and equipment, and understanding health and safety protocols within the boatbuilding industry. 

The entry requirements for this Apprenticeship will be decided by the employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above. It is also essential in this role to have excellent communication skills and problem-solving abilities.

The end-point assessment involves a structured interview, consisting of a presentation, questions and discussion; based around a work-based project, evidenced by a portfolio.

Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship, you could advance to various roles within the boatbuilding and maritime industry. Potential career opportunities include positions such as a boatbuilding supervisor, a specialist craftsman, a production manager, or even a technical manager.
