As an Engineering Design and Draughtsperson apprentice, you’ll be at the forefront of creating, developing, and refining detailed engineering designs and drawings, ensuring precision and functionality in various engineering projects. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including producing detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings, interpreting technical specifications, collaborating with engineers and other professionals, and ensuring that all designs comply with relevant standards and regulations. You’ll work on diverse projects ranging from mechanical components to structural designs, playing a crucial role in bringing engineering concepts to life.

This Apprenticeship offers hands-on experience and comprehensive training in essential design and draughting skills. You’ll learn to utilise various CAD software tools, understand engineering principles and materials, and apply critical thinking to solve design challenges. Additionally, you’ll gain valuable insights into project management, quality assurance, and technical documentation, preparing you to excel in the dynamic world of engineering.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including the following:

  • producing designs and drawings for industrial and commercial construction components, structures, and systems
  • creating CAD models and engineering drawings
  • reviewing and interpreting technical information and requirements
  • identifying and proposing solutions for inaccuracies in engineering drawings
  • developing effective engineering solutions and detailed drawings
  • communicating design information with stakeholders using sketches, models, and reports. 
The Apprenticeship spans 42 months, with apprentices gaining hands-on experience and technical knowledge in disciplines like electrical, mechanical, piping, structural, and control and instrumentation design. 

The entry requirements for this Apprenticeship will be decided by the employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above.

The end point assessment will consist of a knowledge test, a practical test and a structured interview.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include roles such as a design engineer, a mechanical designer, etc.
