As an Engineering Fitter, you will be at the heart of ensuring that machinery and systems operate smoothly and efficiently. You’ll be responsible for a variety of tasks, including interpreting technical drawings, selecting and using appropriate tools and materials, and applying your expertise to assemble and fit components to precise specifications. Whether you’re working on mechanical, electrical, or fluid power systems, your role will be vital in ensuring that all components function correctly and safely.

This Apprenticeship provides you with hands-on experience and extensive training in essential fitting and assembly techniques. You’ll gain proficiency in using a range of tools and equipment, learn to read and interpret engineering drawings, and develop a deep understanding of mechanical systems and their applications. Throughout the program, you’ll also acquire critical skills in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and quality assurance, preparing you to excel in various engineering environments.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including the following:

  • interpreting and utilising engineering data to assemble, fit, and install a wide range of complex mechanical components 
  • operating a variety of tools and machinery to manufacture, modify, and repair engineering assemblies and sub-assemblies
  • conducting precision measurements and quality inspections to ensure components meet technical specifications and industry standards
  • diagnosing and resolving technical issues related to mechanical assemblies, using problem-solving techniques and applying corrective actions
  • reading and understanding detailed engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation to guide assembly and fitting tasks
  • collaborating with engineers and other professionals to improve designs, optimise assembly processes, and ensure the overall integrity of the final product.
The Apprenticeship spans 42 months, with apprentices gaining hands-on experience and technical knowledge in disciplines such as mechanical fitting, assembly techniques, tool usage, and quality control in an engineering environment. 

The entry requirements for this Apprenticeship will be decided by the employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above.

The end point assessment will consist of a report including evidence and questioning, a multiple-choice test and a professional discussion with a portfolio of evidence

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include roles such as an electrical fitter, a controls and systems fitter, etc.
