What's it all about?

The Level 2 Certificate in Fashion and Textiles is a hands-on, technical course, designed to
further develop and challenge the skills you learned in pattern cutting and garment
construction on Level 1.

Underpinning this qualification are broad industry skills and a sound
knowledge of the fashion and textiles industries. Throughout the course a range of industry-led techniques and methods are embedded. You will further explore advanced methods of
clothing manufacture and pattern cutting using industry-standard tools and a variety of
industrial sewing machines. You will produce many stitched and pattern samples, including
the production of one knitted and one woven fabric garment. The pattern cutting processes
involves pattern adaptations for skirts, bodices, sleeves and trousers and the methods
required to produce industry-standard pattern blocks, including a personal bodice block to
your own measurements.

The course explores the subject of tailoring, incorporating a small
design project focussing on research of tailoring techniques and designer interpretation of
them. This culminates in the production of mood boards and tailored jacket designs inspired
by your research. Throughout the course a wide range of techniques and methods are
introduced, and industry requirements and opportunities for the various careers within the
textiles industry are presented. All equipment and materials are supplied.

Course information

You will study the following units:

  • industrial garment construction
  • taking measurements and constructing basic blocks
  • introduction to tailoring
  • producing pattern adaptations.

You will be required to have successfully completed the Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and competency.

Assessment will be carried out via practical observation – formative assessment – throughout
the course. This is primarily to ensure your understanding of the curriculum and assist
where required. Upon completion of the tasks students will present their work in two files in week 14 as part of their summative assessment. This will result in a pass or fail – this is not a graded course. The files of work are ultimately a resource for
you to take home so that you may continue to practice beyond the course, having your own record of techniques and processes to refer to. Files will be supplied to you on day one of the course.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop a basic level of skills allowing you to move on
to employment, progress to a BA Degree course in Fashion and Textiles or an Apprenticeship in local industry, or to consider starting your own small business.

Please note fees are quoted for one year only.
