What's it all about?

The Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles is designed to develop your practical skills in pattern cutting, garment construction, stitching skills, and more.

Underpinning this qualification are broad industry skills and a sound knowledge of the fashion and textiles industries.

You will be introduced to industrial methods of clothing manufacturing and pattern cutting using industry standard tools and a variety of industrial sewing machines. You will produce many stitched and pattern samples alongside a skirt and top design project which you will have designed, pattern cut and sewn to an industrial brief, showcasing your personal
creative flair. Throughout the course a wide range of techniques and methods are introduced, and industry requirements and opportunities for the various careers within the textiles industry are presented. All equipment and materials are supplied.

Course information

You will study the following units:

  • garment construction (industrial)
  • pattern construction

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.

Assessment will be carried out via practical observation – formative assessment – throughout
the course. This is primarily to ensure your understanding of the curriculum and assist
where required. 

Completion of the tasks, which you will present in a file of work in week eight forms part of summative assessment at the end of the course and will result in a pass or fail (this is not a graded course). The file of work is ultimately a resource for you to take home so that you may continue to practice beyond the course, having your own record
of techniques and processes to refer to. Files will be supplied to you on day one of the
course.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop a basic level of skills allowing you to move on to employment, progress to the Level 2 Certificate in Fashion and Textiles or an Apprenticeship, or consider starting your own small business.
