As a Welder apprentice, you will play a crucial role in the manufacturing and construction industries by joining metals together with precision and skill. Working closely with engineers and other tradespeople, you’ll ensure that structures and products are strong, durable, and built to exact specifications. Your responsibilities will include setting up and operating welding equipment, interpreting technical drawings, and inspecting welds for quality.

This Apprenticeship offers comprehensive hands-on experience and specialised training in various welding techniques. You’ll develop expertise in processes like MIG, TIG, and MMA welding, as well as gain a deep understanding of materials and safety standards. This training will prepare you to work independently or as part of a team in diverse settings, from construction sites to manufacturing plants.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including:

  • interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
  • setting up and operating welding equipment
  • performing welding using processes like MIG, TIG, and MMA
  • inspecting and testing completed welds for quality
  • adhering to health and safety regulations in welding operations.
This Apprenticeship spans 18 months, combining practical work experience with structured learning. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain technical knowledge and hands-on skills. The remaining 80% will be spent working on-site, applying your learning in real-world welding scenarios.

The entry requirements for this Apprenticeship will be decided by the employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above.

The end point assessment consists of a multiple-choice test, a practical assessment with questions, and an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence. 

Following successful completion, you could progress into various roles within the welding sector. This might include positions such as a multi-skilled welder, welding supervisor, or even specialisation in advanced welding techniques.
