As a Horticulture or Landscape Construction Operative, you’ll be at the forefront of creating, maintaining, and enhancing beautiful outdoor spaces that contribute to the well-being of communities and the environment. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including planting, pruning, and maintaining gardens and green spaces, as well as constructing hard landscape features like paths, walls, and water features. You’ll work on diverse projects ranging from private gardens to public parks, ensuring all spaces are aesthetically pleasing and sustainable.

This Apprenticeship offers hands-on experience and comprehensive training in essential horticulture and landscape construction skills. You’ll learn to identify and cultivate a wide range of plants, use advanced tools and equipment, and understand the principles of soil science and plant health. Additionally, you’ll gain valuable insights into health and safety regulations, environmental conservation, and project management, preparing you to excel in the dynamic field of horticulture and landscape construction.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including the following:

  • complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • carrying out operations to minimise adverse environmental impact
  • operating or using tools, equipment, and machinery
  • processing waste from horticultural activities
  • maintaining plant health, including pest, pathogen, and disorder management
  • installing soft landscape materials, such as shrubs, trees, and turf
  • constructing hard landscape surfaces, structures, and features
  • maintaining hard surfaces, features, or structures.
This Apprenticeship spans 24 months, combining practical work experience with study. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within a business environment, applying your learning in real-world scenarios.

The entry requirements for this Apprenticeship will be decided by the employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above.

The end point assessment will consist of a multiple-choice test, a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence and a practical assessment with questions.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include roles such as a maintenance operative, a landscaper, etc.
