As a Laboratory Technician, you’ll be at the forefront of scientific innovation, conducting both routine and specialised tests to support various industries. You will carry out essential lab work, manage equipment, and ensure accurate data collection. Your responsibilities will include preparing and performing lab tasks, using specialised equipment, analysing data, and maintaining meticulous records. This Apprenticeship offers a diverse range of experiences, providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a dynamic and regulated environment, paving the way for a successful career in scientific and technical support.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas, including:

  • laboratory testing
  • data analysis
  • laboratory safety
  • quality assurance.
This Apprenticeship spans 24 months, combining practical work experience with study. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within a laboratory environment, applying your learning in real-world tasks such as conducting experiments, analysing data, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. You will also develop expertise in recording and interpreting scientific data, working collaboratively within a team, and adhering to regulatory requirements and ethical guidelines.

For the best chance of success, learners are required to have a minimum of grade 4 (C) in English and maths.

The end point assessment will consist of a knowledge test, an observation with questioning and a structured interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include a role as a lab assistant, a lab technician, an analytical chemist, etc.
