What's it all about?

This City & Guilds certificate at City College Plymouth will give you the skills you need to work at a junior level in men’s hairdressing and barbering. It will cover basic barbering skills and is specifically designed to enable you to carry out a range of techniques in barbering. In our fully equipped salons you will learn barbering skills in cutting, styling and shampooing. You will also develop your skills in customer care and consultation, and health and safety.

Course information

You will study core and specialist units in client consultation, shampooing and conditioning, styling men’s hair, cutting men’s hair, cutting facial hair, and health and safety practices in the salon.

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • a GCSE (or equivalent) in English
  • an NVQ/VRQ Level 1 in Hairdressing or Barbering
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Your practical applications will be assessed through observation, oral questioning, written assignments and online exams.

On successful completion you may progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Barbering at the College, work as an Improver in a Barber’s shop, work on a cruise ship, become a specialist technician, or pursue a junior role in a salon.
