As a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician apprentice, you’ll ensure the safety, integrity, and efficiency of essential plants and equipment. You will also specialise in areas such as electrical, mechanical, control and instrumentation, or wind turbines.

Your responsibilities will include installation, maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair of complex systems, ensuring operational excellence across various industries. This Apprenticeship offers a comprehensive pathway to develop your skills in a vital and ever-evolving field, preparing you for a successful career in engineering maintenance and operations.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas, including:

  • electrical, electronic, and control equipment
  • mechanical equipment and systems
  • fluid and thermodynamic systems
  • process control and instrumentation
  • condition monitoring and testing
  • safe working practices
  • interpreting and creating technical documentation
  • quality control procedures
  • working with engineering drawings and specifications
  • fault diagnosis and rectification.
This Apprenticeship spans 36 months, combining practical work experience with study. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within an engineering environment, applying your learning in real-world tasks such as maintaining and operating engineering systems, diagnosing and repairing faults, and ensuring the efficiency and safety of engineering operations. 

You will also develop expertise in mechanical and electrical systems, control and instrumentation, and plant operations, alongside gaining a comprehensive understanding of health and safety regulations and technical documentation.

You will typically require a minimum of three GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science.

The end point assessment consists of three components: a knowledge test, a practical observation and a technical interview.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include a role as a mechanical technician, a plant operations technician, an electrical technician, etc.
