As a Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprentice, you’ll be at the forefront of the automotive industry, working on cars and vans to perform essential servicing and repairs.

You’ll gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, develop problem-solving skills, and learn to work independently and as part of a team. This Apprenticeship offers a comprehensive pathway to mastering vehicle systems, from routine maintenance to complex fault diagnostics, all while contributing to environmental sustainability.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including:

  • working safely in compliance with health and safety regulations
  • carrying out routine servicing and inspections
  • inspecting and preparing vehicles to meet industry standards
  • using diagnostic equipment to identify faults and issues
  • conducting repairs on engines, transmissions, and other vehicle systems
  • using appropriate tools and techniques for vehicle maintenance and repair
  • performing electrical and electronic system diagnostics and repairs
  • conducting quality checks and completing documentation.
This Apprenticeship spans 36 months, combining practical work experience with study. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within a motor vehicle service and maintenance environment, applying your learning in real-world scenarios.

For the best chance of success, learners are required to have a minimum of grade 4 (C) in English and maths.

The end point assessment consists of three components: an online knowledge test, skills test and a professional discussion.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector. This could include roles such as an automotive engineer, a car mechanic, a motor vehicle service technician, etc.
