As a Painting and Decorating apprentice, you’ll be at the forefront of the construction and renovation industry, ensuring that both residential and commercial spaces look their best. You’ll gain hands-on experience with a variety of painting and decorating techniques, develop critical skills in surface preparation, and learn to work independently and as part of a team. This Apprenticeship offers a comprehensive pathway to mastering the craft of painting and decorating, from applying different types of paint and finishes to implementing intricate wallpapering techniques, all while contributing to the aesthetic enhancement of interior and exterior environments.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including the following:

  • preparing surfaces for painting and decorating by removing old paint, filling holes, and ensuring surfaces are smooth and clean
  • applying paints, varnishes, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, or sprayers to a variety of surfaces including wood, metal, and plaster
  • creating decorative effects such as marbling, graining, and stencilling to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space
  • hanging wallpaper, fabrics, and other wall coverings with precision and attention to detail
  • mixing and matching paints and stains to achieve desired colours and finishes
  • adhering to health and safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment
  • maintaining tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working order.
This Apprenticeship spans 24 months, combining practical work experience with study. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within a professional painting and decorating environment, applying your learning in real-world scenarios. 

For the best chance of success, learners are required to have a minimum of grade 4 (C) in English and maths.

The end point assessment will consist of a multiple-choice test, a practical assessment and an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector.
