As a Plastering apprentice, you’ll be at the heart of the construction and renovation industry, ensuring that both residential and commercial spaces are structurally sound and visually appealing. You’ll gain hands-on experience with a variety of plastering techniques, develop critical skills in surface preparation, and learn to work independently and as part of a team. This Apprenticeship offers a comprehensive pathway to mastering the craft of plastering, from applying different types of plaster and render to creating smooth finishes and intricate decorative mouldings, all while contributing to the integrity and beauty of interior and exterior environments.

Course information

This Apprenticeship will cover various areas including the following:

  • applying plaster to internal walls and ceilings to create smooth or textured finishes using techniques such as solid plastering, fibrous plastering, and dry lining
  • repairing and restoring existing plasterwork, ensuring that damaged areas are patched and finished to match the surrounding surfaces
  • creating and installing ornamental plasterwork such as cornices, ceiling roses, and columns to enhance architectural features
  • preparing surfaces for plastering by cleaning, priming, and applying bonding agents to ensure proper adhesion of plaster
  • mixing and applying different types of plaster, including lime, gypsum, and cement-based plasters, to achieve the desired finish and durability
  • adhering to health and safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of materials
  • maintaining tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working order, including cleaning and storing tools properly after use. 
This Apprenticeship spans 24 months, combining practical work experience with study. At least 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job training, where you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills through structured learning and hands-on practice. The remaining 80% will be spent working within a professional plastering environment, applying your learning in real-world scenarios.

For the best chance of success, learners are required to have a minimum of grade 4 (C) in English and maths.

The end point assessment will consist of a multiple-choice test, a practical assessment and an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Following successful completion, you could progress onto employment within the sector.
