What's it all about?

Interested in supporting people to meet their goals at the gym? Become qualified to work as a gym instructor!

Completing this qualification will enable you to work as a gym-based fitness instructor. You will also be able to deliver gym inductions and design health-related gym programmes. 

Course information

You will complete the following units: 

  • anatomy and physiology for exercise 
  • health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment 
  • principles of exercise, fitness and health 
  • know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity 
  • planning gym-based exercise 
  • instructing gym-based exercise. 

You should have appropriate levels of maths and English – or be working towards, and be aged 16 or over. 

The assessment methods used in this qualification are: 

  • coursework (in six of six mandatory units) 
  • multiple choice examination (in two of six mandatory units) 
  • practical demonstration/assignment (in six of six mandatory units).
