What's it all about?

If you want to work in the food and beverage industry, this City & Guilds Professional Food and Beverage course is a great starting point. This training course at City College Plymouth will help you gain knowledge and skills within the food and beverage service area. You will undertake topics around understanding menus, legislation, the food and beverage business, and dealing with payments. You will further your learning by undertaking practical elements around the bar and hot drinks service whilst also working in a food service area such as a restaurant. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to work at high-profile external events all around Plymouth, such as MTV Crashes Plymouth and Flavour Fest.

Course information

The subjects you will study include:

  • working in food and beverage areas
  • food safety
  • events
  • marketing and promotion
  • customer service activities
  • preparing, cooking and serving food in a food service area.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.

In order to be successful on this course you will need to have GCSEs a grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, as well as an interest in serving customers and working at events. You may have also completed a Level 1 in hospitality and catering.

Assessment will be through practical work and assignments.

On successful completion you may wish to progress to a level 3 course in a related discipline.
