What's it all about?

Would you like to become a forensic investigator, an inventor, science researcher or engineer? Do you like carrying out practical tasks and experiments? Do you wonder how things work? Are you interested in the solar system and space exploration, how the human body works, or how to investigate a crime scene? This BTEC First Extended Diploma in Applied Science is equivalent to GCSE level and could be a great starting point for you. Remember, all great journeys begin with a single step and this course is for the curious and adventurous. When you successfully complete this course, you can then progress to one of our level 3 courses in forensic, biomedical or marine science and conservation which could be the next step towards university study such as sports science, engineering, medicine, dentistry and animal health. Alternatively, you could enter employment within the broad science/medical industry in roles such as laboratory technician, environmental and health protection and roles involving sample analysis.

Course information

The course will consists of a total of eight mandatory units, which cover a range of science topics, including:

  • principles of science (externally assessed)
  • chemistry and our earth
  • energy and our universe
  • biology and our environment
  • applications of chemical substances
  • applications of physical science
  • health applications of life science
  • scientific skills (externally assessed)

You will then study another four optional units, which are all internally assessed. These may include:

  • the living body
  • investigating a crime scene
  • science in medicine
  • exploring our universe

these units will develop a range of scientific skills and prepare you for further study.

In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades 3-1 (D-F) (including English at grade 3 (D) or higher). In exceptional circumstances, other grades will be considered. This will be based on interview and initial assessment
  • a BTEC foundation dipoma
  • an NVQ Level 1/technical certificate
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience

There are two units; Principles of Science and Scientific Skills, which are externally assessed through exams, the remainder of the units are internally assessed

Upon successful completion of this course, you may progress to our level 3 courses in applied science. Alternatively, you could enter employment within the broad science/medical industry.

The typical sorts of employment opportunities include laboratory technician, environmental and health protection and roles involving sample analysis. You would also be prepared for the first steps in various professions: sports science, engineering, medicine, dentistry and animal health.
