What's it all about?

Bricklaying is a long-established trade in both the UK and around the world.

Studying a Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying will allow you to learn a variety of skills which enable you to build, repair and maintain the country’s housing stock.

This course is aimed at those wishing to develop their skills in bricklaying, to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade, or to progress through an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman.

Course information

The main subjects covered are:

  • health and safety
  • industry organisation
  • working at heights
  • setting out buildings
  • brick and block walling.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.

In order to be successful on this level of course you will need two of the following:

  • a Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • four GCSEs at grades 3-1 (D-F) (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ level 1/technical certificate in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Candidates without a Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying will be required to complete a skills test to assess their suitability.

You will be assessed under simulated working conditions in the construction workshops, classrooms and College construction site. You will also have unit end tests and three practical tests.

On successful completion you may progress to an Apprenticeship in the sector, or gain employment as, for example, an improver bricklayer.
