What's it all about?

Would you like to be a joiner and learn how to create pieces such as doors, windows and stairs? Joinery is a skill and an art. It takes a lot of practice and patience to produce a high standard of work that can be used in today’s ever-growing construction industry. And with 10,000 construction jobs available in Plymouth, those skills will be in demand! This level 2 City and Guilds Bench Joinery course at City College Plymouth will ensure you’ll learn skills that can set you on your path to a career in the construction industry. You’ll be working with the latest technologies, using and setting up power tools.

Course information

You will study the following subjects:

  • health and safety
  • construction technology
  • setting out joinery items
  • marking out joinery items
  • manufacturing joinery items
  • use and maintain a circular saw.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.

In order to be accepted on this course, you will need to have achieved a Level 1 Qualification in Carpentry and Joinery (DIW1) preferably registered by City and Guilds. Other applicants will be considered if they possess a completed qualification in similar wood occupation subjects. This would be verified and discussed during the interview process.

Most of your assessment will be under simulated industry working conditions, in the workshops and classrooms. There is also one externally set exam.

On successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress to a level 3 construction course at the College. Or you may wish to move on to a job in the construction industry.
